"Strobe" is a single by deadmau5 featured on his fourth studio album, For Lack of a Better Name. It was released on 3 September 2009 under mau5trap Ultra Records, and Virgin Records. This track served as the sixth and final single from the album.

Background[]

The song originated as an ambient composition titled "Then We Stood Still," which was uploaded to the deadmau5 YouTube account.[1] Several months later, while staying at the Great Eastern Hotel in England, Zimmerman combined this piece with a separate dance track he had previously produced.[2] Initially dissatisfied with the result, he hesitated to release it despite encouragement from his tour manager, Harvey Taman. Taman repeatedly urged Zimmerman to include the track in his next album, but he resisted for several months. Eventually, with limited options for For Lack of a Better Name, Zimmerman relented, leading to the release of "Strobe", which became one of his most successful songs.[3]

In 2012, a live version of "Strobe" was exclusively released on the iTunes version of his sixth studio album, > album title goes here <.

In 2016, Strobe (Remixes) was released on mau5trap as a way to celebrate the label's one hundredth release. This album included remixes from Dimension, Feed Me, Com Truise, Lane 8, and Attlas.

In 2018, Zimmerman and Gregory Reveret recorded an orchestral rendition of "Strobe" for the album Where's The Drop?.

Trivia[]

  • "Strobe" gets its name from a VST plugin from FXpansion called Strobe. This plugin was used to create the pluck sound heard in the intro.
  • The dance section of "Strobe" was first heard at the Sonar Club in Barcelona on 20 June 2009.[4]
  • A 20-minute long extended edit of "Strobe" was created and played exclusively for The Guvernment in 2015. [5]
  • On 11 March 2016, Zimmerman teased a remastered version of "Strobe" for mau5trap's 100th release.[6] He ended up releasing "Eborts" instead.
  • Similarly to "Ghosts 'n' Stuff", "Strobe" is a song Zimmerman has grown tired of.
    • Ironically, these two songs were written in the same hotel room.
