Project 56 is a self-released demo album compiled by deadmau5. Originally uploaded to his SectionZ page on April 5th, 2006[1], it was subsequently re-uploaded on February 19th, 2008 to the deadmau5 website.[2] A portion of the demos included in this compilation were previously completed and featured on the album Get Scraped.

Background[]

According to Zimmerman, the album was the culmination of seven years spent making electronic music for himself and others alike.[3] Before the album's release, some music videos were uploaded to deadmau5.com in early 2006. On February 7th, a video for "Monday" was published, featuring a simple flash animation.[4] One month later, on March 13th, a video for "Go Ahead and Say It" was added, which showed Zimmerman running around Niagara Falls.[5] Interestingly, the video was titled "Tell Me V2".

When the album was uploaded to SectionZ on April 5th, it was unfinished and contained only 47 tracks. The tracklist was not organized alphabetically but in a random sequence. People could download the tracks individually, but not as a single zip file.

In the updated 2008 upload featuring 56 tracks, the album was available for download both as a complete album and with the option to download individual tracks. Within the zip file, two of the tracks retained their original order, while the rest appeared to have been arranged alphabetically. However, this track order isn't fully confirmed because the current circulating download of the album does not have track numbers for any of the files. Additionally, the cover art attached in the files is likely from the 2008 release, but this has not been officially confirmed.

When reflecting on the album on MySpace, Zimmerman stated that "the idea back then was to do a thing called Project 56 which was 56 tracks for people with short attention spans. Instead of waiting years to finally throw it together, I figured I'd just toss it to everyone." [6].

Trivia[]

  • Unlike other deadmau5 releases, most of the tracks on this album have short runtimes. Several fail to make it past the one-minute mark.
  • Track 6, "Antiquism" is divided into two parts: 6.1 and 6.2.
  • The original vocalist of "Monday" is supposedly Paul Gigliotti, as mentioned by Steve Duda.
    • A second edit of the track "Monday" appears on the album while(1<2). It contains a vocoded edit of the original vocals.
  • The only track that changed titles was "Working Squid", which was originally named "Working Class Squid".
  • When reversed, the melody of "Equal" bears a resemblance to "Creep".
  • In a livestream, Zimmerman played a hip-hop remix of "Rubiq", featuring a rap from his former girlfriend. This rap was a voicemail that he received as a birthday gift and he placed it on top of a beat he made.
