"Aural Psynapse" is a standalone single by deadmau5 that was released on 4 November 2011 by mau5trap and Ultra Records. It was later included on the 2014 greatest hits album 5 Years of Mau5.
Background[]
The earliest known version of the track, originally titled "Psynapse," was created in 2002, as revealed by SectionZ artist Zardvark.[1] It was likely shared on the Image-Line forums or or a similar online platform. This early iteration differs notably from the final version later released on SectionZ, particularly in its length and the use of a different lead synth.
An extended version of the track was uploaded to SectionZ on 17 June 2002, under the alias Halcyon441.[2]. This iteration would later be included in the self-released compilation deadmau5 Circa 1998-2002, released on 5 April 2006. Prior to its inclusion in the compilation, a snippet of the track was featured on the homepage of Xeo Freestyle, an early Flash website that Zimmerman helped to develop.
In April 2011, Zimmerman previewed a remake of the track on Ustream while it was still a work in progress, noting that it was originally "a track [he] made [...] ten years ago". The remake retains the original melodies while incorporating elements of the progressive house style commonly associated with deadmau5.
The reworked track made its live debut in May 2011 during a concert in Malaysia, and was subsequently performed in August 2011 as part of the Meowingtons Hax Tour. Following its official release on 4 November 2011, the track was also featured during the Hard x Mouth Taped Shut event in December 2011, held as a promotional event for the film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Trivia[]
- The song was named after the Aural Synapse preset by Harmor in FL Studio.
- Using "psy" may have been an additional trance pun.
- The original version appears in the Miniclip game Little Rocketman.
- The remake includes a melody from the drop of "Some Chords".
- A vocal version of "Aural Psynapse" featuring Bonnie McKee was leaked online, with the title "DJ Play That Song For Me". This mix featured a new chorus while retaining the original verses from the earlier version.
- It is presumed that, similar to "Seeya Next Tuesday", the instrumental was sampled without authorization, which may have contributed to the track not receiving an official release.
- The demo was later reworked into Priyanka Chopra's 2012 single "Erase."
